Author of Bears Ears: Landscape of Refuge and Resistance (University of Utah Press, 2022), Dr. Andrew Gulliford will discuss case studies of river conservation in Colorado’s Canyon Country. From a forthcoming book, Dr. Gulliford will describe the BLM’s system of National Conservation Lands, which covers 37 million acres of Congressionally designated national monuments, national conservation areas, wild & scenic rivers, historic trails, and wilderness. Gulliford will compare case studies of preserved river and canyon systems in Colorado including McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area and Ruby-Horsethief Canyons on the Colorado River; Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area and the Gunnison River; and Brown’s Canyon National Monument and the Arkansas River.
