"Dancing with Uncertainty" We all navigate uncertainty in a myriad of ways. We have our go-to coping methods, from apple turn-overs to death-scrolling Youtube reels through the night. Few things fuels anxiety as efficiently as not knowing what's going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, next election? Conversely, when it comes to art-making, uncertainty can open flyways to places we might never have traveled to otherwise. Leaning into not-knowing, inhabiting it, befriending it, feeding it chocolate or leftover Christmas hard candy, does call for a few tools. A fair amount of curiosity helps. As does a cup and a half of risk. These, and a blank page are plenty tools to start. Picture yourself as a clean canvas seated before a clean canvas. Now... begin.
Tommy Archuleta is Santa Fe’s seventh Poet Laureate, appointed in January 2024. Archuleta is a poet, musician, mental health therapist, and substance abuse counselor for the New Mexico Corrections Department, and who also holds a lectureship at the New Mexico School for the Arts. He is the author of the book-length poetry collection, Susto, which was published in 2023 by the University of Colorado Press as a 2023 Mountain/West Poetry Series title. This collection is featured in the November/December 2023 issue of Poets & Writers as part of the magazine’s annual, 5 Over 50, exposé. Archuleta is also the author of the chapbook, Fieldnotes, published by Lilly Poetry Review and Books. Most recently his work has appeared in the New England Review, Laurel Review, Lily Poetry Review, The Cortland Review, Guesthouse, and the Poem-a-Day series sponsored by the Academy of American Poets. He lives and writes on the Cochiti Reservation.
